Holi 2027 is Monday 22 March, with Holika Dahan on the evening of Sunday 21 March. The men's Holi outfit question is simpler than the women's, and most men get it wrong in the same two ways: they wear something synthetic, and they wear short sleeves.
Fix those two things and the day goes better. Here is the full brief.
The two rules that actually matter
Cotton, and sleeves. Everything else is detail.
- Cotton releases colour; polyester keeps it. A synthetic tee will come out of the wash the same shade it went in. Cotton in a cold wash gives most dry gulal back.
- Covered skin is skin you do not scrub. Colour on a forearm takes two days and a lot of soap. Colour on a sleeve takes a wash cycle.
- Cheap beats precious. Anything above about Rs.800 is a piece you will spend the day protecting instead of enjoying.
- Loose beats fitted. Wet fabric clings; an oversized cut stays off the skin.

Option 1: the white cotton tee
The default, and the cheapest way in. White shows colour best, which is the whole point of the photographs afterwards:
- Oversized Half Sleeves Printed Round Neck White T-Shirt (Rs.499).
- Not Bound Oversized Cotton White T-shirt (Rs.499).
- Rigo Men's Oversized Typography White T-shirt (Rs.499).
- White Printed Drop Shoulder Oversized T-Shirt (Rs.499).
- Men Game Over White Oversized Graphic T-shirt (Rs.599).
- Majestic Tiger Puff Print Oversized White T-Shirt (Rs.599).
All oversized cotton, all under Rs.600. Buy two — one for Holika Dahan on the 21st and one for the colour day. More options in our Rigo menswear guide.

Option 2: the short kurta
In Maharashtra and across the north, a white short kurta is the traditional Holi choice — and it is the better one. More coverage than a tee, looser through the body, and it looks right at the lunch afterwards in a way a colour-soaked tee does not.
- Off White Dobby Stripe Short Kurta (Rs.1,099).
- Ivory Green Dobby Stripe Short Kurta (Rs.1,099).
- Off White Blue Dobby Stripe Short Kurta (Rs.1,099).
Short kurtas beat full-length ones for Holi — less fabric to soak, and nothing dragging through wet colour on the ground.
Option 3: colour over white
If you would rather keep the piece afterwards, wear something that already has colour in it. Nothing will show, and the tee lives to see another summer:
- Rigo Men's Oversized Typography Green T-shirt (Rs.499).
- Not Bound Oversized Cotton Purple T-shirt (Rs.499).
- Green Printed Oversized Round Neck Cotton T-Shirt (Rs.499).

Bottoms, feet and the rest
- Bottoms: old cotton trackpants or pyjamas. Denim survives colour but soaks up water and turns heavy and cold within the hour.
- Footwear: rubber slides or sneakers you can hose down. Never leather or suede — both stain permanently and neither recovers.
- Sunglasses: genuinely useful. Dry gulal in the eyes ends the day early.
- Phone: sealed pouch, and do not take it out for photographs with colour-covered hands.
- Watch and chains: leave them at home. Colour lodges in every link, and a bracelet is easy to lose in a crowd.

Before and after
Oil first. Coconut oil in the hair and on exposed skin — ears, neck, hairline, between the fingers — makes the difference between colour rinsing off and colour staying for three days. Sunscreen underneath if you will be out through the afternoon.
Afterwards: shake the garment out dry and outdoors before it touches water, then rinse and soak in cold water only, separately from other laundry. Hot water sets pigment into cotton permanently — it is the mistake that ruins the most clothes every year.
Holi outfit FAQ for men
What should men wear on Holi?
An oversized white cotton tee or a white short kurta, cotton trackpants, rubber footwear, sunglasses, and hair and skin oiled beforehand. Avoid anything synthetic and anything you would be sad to lose.
Are white clothes necessary?
No — they are convention, because colour shows best against white. If you would rather keep the garment, wear a printed or dark tee and nothing will show afterwards.
Will the colour come out of a white t-shirt?
Dry gulal on cotton usually comes out if you shake it off first and wash cold. Wet colours often do not. Assume the tee is a write-off at Rs.499 and treat survival as a bonus.
Can I wear a kurta to Holi?
Yes, and in much of India it is the traditional choice. Pick a short kurta over a full-length one — less fabric to soak, and it stays off the wet ground.
