Holi 2027: Dates, What to Wear and How to Prepare (Complete India Guide)

White oversized cotton t-shirt for Holi 2027 at Stylera

Holi 2027 falls on Monday 22 March, with Holika Dahan the evening before on Sunday 21 March. That is the date given by the most widely used Indian panchangs. A few regional calculations place the pair a day later — Holika Dahan on 22 March and Rangwali Holi on 23 March — because the Holika Dahan muhurat depends on local sunset and on the Bhadra period, both of which shift between cities. Check your local panchang in the week before if you are planning the bonfire itself; for everything else, plan around 22 March.

This is the complete guide: what actually happens on each day, what to wear so your clothes survive, which fabrics hold colour and which release it, and how to protect skin and hair before you step out.

Holi 2027: the dates in full

Day Date (2027) What happens
Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi) Sunday 21 March Evening bonfire, Phalguna Purnima. Families gather, parikrama around the fire.
Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) Monday 22 March The colour day. Morning play, lunch, evening visits.

Holi is set by the Hindu lunisolar calendar, so it moves every year — it is tied to Phalguna Purnima, the full moon of the month of Phalguna, not to a fixed Gregorian date. In Braj (Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana) celebrations start over a week earlier with Lathmar Holi and run through to Rang Panchami.

What to wear for Holi: the three rules

Holi clothing is the one time of year when "buy something you are happy to ruin" is genuine styling advice — but it does not have to mean wearing a torn old vest.

  1. White, or close to it. White is traditional for a practical reason: colour reads brightest against it, and photographs best. Off-white, ivory and cream do the same job and hide a stubborn stain better than pure white.
  2. Cotton, not synthetic. Cotton breathes, absorbs water without going transparent, and — critically — releases dry colour far more willingly in the wash than polyester does. Synthetic fabric grabs pigment and keeps it.
  3. Full sleeves, full length. Every centimetre of covered skin is skin you do not have to scrub later. Long sleeves and full-length bottoms are the single most effective Holi precaution there is.

The Holi wardrobe: what to actually buy

Buy cheap, buy cotton, buy white. The sweet spot is a piece under Rs.800 that you would genuinely wear again if it survives — not something so precious you spend the day protecting it.

For men, plain and printed white cotton tees do the job and cost very little:

For women, a white or off-white cotton kurta is the most comfortable thing you can wear in a March afternoon, and it covers more than a tee:

Men who prefer a kurta for Holi — and in Maharashtra and the north many do — have the Off White Dobby Stripe Short Kurta and the Ivory Green Dobby Stripe Short Kurta (Rs.1,099 each). A short kurta is easier in colour than a full-length one — less fabric to soak.

Which fabrics survive Holi, and which do not

Fabric How it handles colour Verdict
Cotton Absorbs water, releases dry gulal well in a cold wash Best choice
Cotton-linen Similar to cotton, dries faster, creases more Good
Denim Survives anything but takes hours to dry and gets heavy Fine for bottoms only
Polyester / synthetic blends Grips pigment; wet colour often permanent Avoid
Silk, chiffon, georgette Water-marks, and colour sets into the weave Never
White leather / suede shoes Stains permanently Never

One more practical note: wet colour is far harder to remove than dry gulal. If you have a choice of gathering, the dry-colour ones are kinder to clothes.

Before you step out: skin, hair and phone

  • Oil your hair generously. Coconut oil through the lengths and into the scalp creates a barrier so pigment rinses out instead of sitting in. Tie it up.
  • Moisturiser or oil on exposed skin — ears, neck, hairline, between the fingers, around the nails. Colour clings hardest exactly where you forget.
  • Dark nail polish stops pigment staining the nail bed.
  • Sunscreen under the oil. A March afternoon outdoors in India is still a March afternoon in India.
  • Phone in a sealed pouch, and sunglasses to keep dry colour out of your eyes.
  • Wear shoes you can hose down — rubber slides or old sneakers, never leather or suede.

After Holi: getting the colour out

  1. Shake the garment out dry, outdoors, first. Most gulal is powder sitting on the surface — beating it out removes far more than you would expect, and stops you turning powder into dye the moment it hits water.
  2. Rinse in cold water only. Hot water sets pigment into cotton permanently. This is the single most common Holi laundry mistake.
  3. Soak separately for 30 minutes in cold water with a mild detergent. Never with other laundry — Holi colour transfers.
  4. Do not use the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone. Heat locks in whatever is left.
  5. Accept that some pieces will not come clean. That is why rule one is to buy cheap.

Holi 2027 FAQ

What is the exact date of Holi 2027?

Rangwali Holi — the colour day — is Monday 22 March 2027, with Holika Dahan on the evening of Sunday 21 March. Some regional panchangs place these a day later. Because Holika Dahan timing depends on local sunset and the Bhadra period, confirm the muhurat locally if you are attending the bonfire.

Why do people wear white on Holi?

Colour shows most vividly against white, which is the entire visual point of the festival, and white photographs best once the colour lands. It is convention rather than religious requirement — wear a light colour if you prefer.

Can I save my clothes after Holi?

Sometimes. Cotton in dry gulal usually recovers if you shake it out and wash cold. Wet colours on synthetic fabric generally do not come out at all. Plan for the piece to be a write-off and treat survival as a bonus.

What should children wear for Holi?

Full-sleeve cotton, light colours, and something with no loose drawstrings or trailing dupattas around a crowd. Our kids edit has cotton tees that cost little enough not to worry about.
