Buying an outfit per occasion is how people end up spending ₹20,000 on clothes they wear once. This is the wardrobe-first version.

The four registers, not ten festivals
Ten festivals sounds like ten wardrobes. It is actually four dress registers, and every occasion in the season falls into one of them.
Daytime traditional — temple visits, morning pujas, daytime visiting. Cotton kurta, covered, comfortable. This is the bulk of the season by number of occasions.
Evening festive — Lakshmi Puja, Karwa Chauth, Durga Puja evenings. Kurta set or a co-ordinated look, deeper colours, more finish.
Party — Diwali parties, Navratri events, dinners. Western or contemporary silhouettes are entirely at home here.
Movement — garba and dandiya specifically. Different rules: cotton, flat shoes, nothing that catches. See the garba night colours guide.
The six-piece festive wardrobe
Six pieces cover all eleven weeks. Here is the build.
Three cotton kurtas in different colour families, around ₹700–₹800 each. These carry every daytime occasion and most of the colour conventions. The Pink Gotta Patti Kurta, the Dark Green Festive Kurta and the Mustard Kurta With Lace between them cover Janmashtami, Navratri, Govardhan and Bhai Dooj.

Where to spend and where not to
Spend on the two evenings you will be photographed most — usually Lakshmi Puja and the Diwali party. Everything else is daywear, and nobody tracks daywear across an eleven-week season.
Do not spend on: single-festival pieces you cannot rewear, heavy embellishment you will find uncomfortable by hour three, or a separate outfit for every colour night of Navratri. Cycling three or four pieces across nine nights is normal and expected.
Fabric across the season
Late August to mid-October is still warm and often humid across most of India — cotton for practically everything. Early November cools slightly in the north but stays warm in Mumbai and the south.
