Onam Outfit for Men 2026: The White-and-Gold Brief

Off white dobby stripe short kurta — Onam outfit for men 2026

Onam menswear has the narrowest colour brief of any Indian festival: off-white and gold, and very little else. The question most men are actually asking is not what colour, but what to wear when a mundu is not practical — an office Onam lunch, a sadya at a friend's house in another city, a workplace celebration.

Updated August 2026.

Onam falls in late August in 2026, with Thiruvonam as the main day. It is Kerala's harvest festival, and the traditional menswear is the mundu — an unstitched white cloth with a gold kasavu border, worn with a plain shirt or bare-chested for temple visits.

This guide covers both: the traditional brief, and the off-white wardrobe that reads correctly when a mundu is not the right call. For the women's version, see our Onam outfit ideas guide.

The Onam colour rule, briefly

Element Traditional Modern equivalent
Base colour Off-white / cream Ivory, pearl white, off-white
Accent Gold kasavu border Gold or beige detailing
Lower body Mundu (unstitched) White or beige trousers, churidar
Upper body Plain shirt or none Short kurta or cotton shirt

Note the distinction: Onam white is off-white, not stark optical white. Cream, ivory and pearl all read correctly; a bright modern white reads slightly off against traditional kasavu gold.

If you are wearing a mundu

The mundu is the correct answer for a sadya at home, a temple visit or a family gathering in Kerala, and nothing here replaces it. Stylera does not stock mundus — source that locally or from a Kerala handloom specialist.

What we can help with is the top half. A plain off-white shirt is traditional, and the Pearl White Subtle Stripe Cotton Shirt at ₹1,099 is the closest match — the stripe is subtle enough not to compete with a kasavu border. For a cleaner option, the Uri Floral Sketch White Shirt at ₹899 works if the occasion is social rather than devotional.

If you are not wearing a mundu

A short kurta in off-white is the single best substitute — it carries the colour convention, works with trousers, and reads correct at any Onam gathering outside Kerala.

The Off White Dobby Stripe Short Kurta at ₹1,099 is the direct pick. Dobby texture matters here: flat off-white is unforgiving in photographs and shows every crease, while dobby breaks up light and holds up through a long lunch.

The Ivory Green Dobby Stripe Short Kurta at ₹1,099 is the alternative if you want a hint of colour — the green is subtle enough to stay within the brief, and it is more forgiving than pure off-white if you are eating a sadya off a banana leaf.

Office and workplace Onam

Corporate Onam celebrations are increasingly common in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi and Mumbai, and a full traditional outfit often overshoots. The brief there is: gesture toward the palette without dressing up.

A beige or off-white shirt does the job. The Uri Beige Textured Jacquard Shirt at ₹999 reads warm and festive without announcing itself, and it goes straight back into work rotation afterwards. If your office Onam is smart-casual, the Aachari White Premium Polo at ₹2,610 is the low-effort version.

The practical problems nobody mentions

Onam sadya is eaten with your hands off a banana leaf, and it involves sambar, avial, payasam and at least four things that stain. Wearing head-to-toe white to a sadya is a genuine risk.

Two practical mitigations: pick a textured or subtly striped off-white rather than a flat one, because texture disguises marks far better; and if you are eating a full sadya, favour the ivory-green or beige options over pure white. Nobody will read it as breaking the convention.

Second: late August in Kerala is humid and often wet. Cotton over anything synthetic, and accept that a crisp shirt will not stay crisp — which is another argument for dobby and jacquard textures over flat weaves.

What to avoid

Black is the one colour to skip. It is not traditionally worn at Onam and reads noticeably out of place in a room where everyone else is in off-white and gold.

Also avoid heavy embroidery. Onam menswear is deliberately plain — the gold kasavu border is the only decoration in the traditional outfit, and adding embellishment on top of that reads as overdressed rather than festive.

Frequently asked questions

What should men wear for Onam 2026?
Traditionally a mundu with a gold kasavu border and a plain off-white shirt. If a mundu is not practical, an off-white or ivory short kurta with trousers carries the same colour convention.

Can men wear colours other than white for Onam?
Ivory, cream and beige all read correctly. A subtle green or gold accent is fine. Black is the main colour to avoid, as it is not traditionally worn at Onam.

What do men wear to an office Onam celebration?
A beige or off-white shirt is usually the right level. A full traditional outfit tends to overshoot in a workplace setting.

Is stark white correct for Onam?
Off-white and cream are more traditional than bright optical white, which can read slightly off against gold kasavu detailing.

When is Onam in 2026?
Onam falls in late August 2026, with Thiruvonam as the main day. Dates vary by the Malayalam calendar, so confirm locally.
