Note the distinction: Onam white is off-white, not stark optical white. Cream, ivory and pearl all read correctly; a bright modern white reads slightly off against traditional kasavu gold.

The practical problems nobody mentions
Onam sadya is eaten with your hands off a banana leaf, and it involves sambar, avial, payasam and at least four things that stain. Wearing head-to-toe white to a sadya is a genuine risk.
Two practical mitigations: pick a textured or subtly striped off-white rather than a flat one, because texture disguises marks far better; and if you are eating a full sadya, favour the ivory-green or beige options over pure white. Nobody will read it as breaking the convention.
Second: late August in Kerala is humid and often wet. Cotton over anything synthetic, and accept that a crisp shirt will not stay crisp — which is another argument for dobby and jacquard textures over flat weaves.
What to avoid
Black is the one colour to skip. It is not traditionally worn at Onam and reads noticeably out of place in a room where everyone else is in off-white and gold.
Also avoid heavy embroidery. Onam menswear is deliberately plain — the gold kasavu border is the only decoration in the traditional outfit, and adding embellishment on top of that reads as overdressed rather than festive.
