Ganpati Visarjan Outfit Guide 2026: What to Wear and Carry

Women Black Woven Design Kurta With Lace — ganpati visarjan outfit guide

Visarjan is the part of Ganeshotsav that people remember longest, and the part they dress for worst. It is emotional, it is crowded, it involves water, and it almost always involves more walking than anyone planned. A little forethought about what you wear turns a difficult few hours into a day you can actually be present for.

This guide is the practical companion to our Ganesh Chaturthi outfit ideas guide — less about looking festive, more about what survives the day.

First: not everyone immerses on the same day

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 starts on Monday 14 September, and households and mandals immerse on different days depending on their own tradition. The 1.5-day visarjan falls on 15 September, the third day on 16 September, the fifth day on 18 September, the seventh day on 20 September, and Anant Chaturdashi on Friday 25 September is the final and biggest one.

That matters for dressing because the conditions differ. A 1.5-day household immersion at a nearby artificial pond is a short, contained affair. Anant Chaturdashi, when the largest processions move through the city and beaches fill up, is a long day on your feet in heavy crowds. Dress for the version you are actually attending.

The five rules that decide everything

Everything below follows from five assumptions, and all five are usually correct.

  • You will get wet. Sea spray, pond water, rain, or someone's enthusiastic gulaal — plan for it rather than hoping.
  • You will be in a crowd. Anything that trails, catches or needs adjusting will be a problem.
  • You will walk. Processions move slowly and park far from the water.
  • You will be standing for a long time. Comfort beats structure.
  • You will be holding things. Keep at least one hand free at all times.

Fabric: quick-dry cotton, nothing precious

Cotton is the whole answer. It breathes in September humidity, it dries while you are still wearing it, and it costs little enough that a stain is not a tragedy. Silk, heavy georgette and anything with delicate zari are the wrong choice — they hold water, take hours to dry, and a water mark on silk is often permanent.

A straight cotton kurta at ₹699–799 from the Krya collection is the sensible pick. For visarjan specifically, choose the darker end of the range: the Women Black Woven Design Kurta With Lace at ₹799, the Women Dark Green Cotton Dobby Kurta at ₹799, the Women Purple Printed Kurta With Lace at ₹799, or the Women Grey Ethnic Motifs Printed Kurta With Piping at ₹799. Prints and textures hide splashes in a way that flat pale fabric does not.

Men have the same brief. A dobby cotton short kurta at ₹1,099 from Uri — the Uri Charcoal Dobby Motif Short Kurta is the most forgiving of the lot — over a Black Linen Pant at ₹799 from London Prints covers it. Our men's Ganpati dressing guide has the fuller men's plan, and the monsoon essentials guide is worth reading for the rain side of things.

Colour: forgiving, not fussy

Traditional white and off-white look beautiful in processions and photograph wonderfully, and plenty of people wear exactly that. Just know what you are signing up for: pale cotton turns translucent when wet and shows every mark. If you want to wear white, wear a thicker weave and take a change of clothes.

Otherwise, mid-to-deep tones — green, maroon, charcoal, indigo, purple — are the practical middle ground. They still read as festive and they let you stop thinking about your clothes.

Footwear: secure, closed enough, washable

This is the single most important call of the day. Wet sand, wet stone and moving crowds are not the place for delicate heels or embellished flats. The lovely pieces in the Rettrose range, limited to one or two pairs a style, belong on an aarti evening or a family lunch — not at the water's edge.

What you want is a shoe that stays on your foot, has some grip, and does not mind being rinsed. The Raven Low Ankle Black Sneakers at ₹1,999 from ZHOE or the Zhoe Stratos at ₹1,999 are solid choices; browse urban casual footwear, women's footwear and men's footwear for more. If you are going into shallow water, sturdy rubber slides you can walk in are more sensible than anything with a strap you would mourn.

Jewellery, bags and what to carry

Keep jewellery minimal. Studs rather than jhumkas, one bangle rather than a stack, and nothing sentimental. In a moving crowd, earrings catch and chains snap, and the odds of finding something small in wet sand are not good.

Carry a crossbody or sling bag you can wear in front of you, hands-free and zipped. Look through sling bags, the wider bag collection or the convertible styles from Lililo. Inside it: phone in a sealed pouch, a little cash, water, a small towel, and any medication you need. Leave the rest at home.

If you are going to a beach, take a full change of clothes and keep it in the car or with whoever is staying back. Wet cotton on a long train ride home is miserable in a way that is entirely avoidable.

Children and older family members

For children, cotton, a spare set, and shoes with a back strap rather than flip-flops that come off in a crowd. Dress them in a colour you can spot from a distance — practical, not decorative. The kids collection and our kids festive outfits guide are a starting point.

For grandparents, prioritise grip underfoot and a light layer for the wait. Nobody needs to prove anything by walking the whole procession; the darshan at the start counts just as much.

The emotional part

There is a reason people cry at visarjan. Ten days of a house arranged around a guest, and then you walk them to the water. Dressing sensibly is not a small or unromantic concern — it is what lets you be there for the aarti, hold someone's hand, and walk back without thinking about a ruined outfit or a shoe you lost in the sand.

Wear the clothes that let you pay attention. That is the whole guide.

FAQ

What should I wear for Ganpati visarjan?

Quick-drying cotton in a forgiving mid-to-deep colour, footwear that stays on and can be rinsed, minimal jewellery, and a crossbody bag you can keep in front of you. Assume you will get wet, walk a long way and stand for a while.

When is visarjan in 2026?

It depends on your household. The 1.5-day immersion is on 15 September, third day 16 September, fifth day 18 September, seventh day 20 September, and Anant Chaturdashi — the final and biggest — falls on Friday 25 September 2026.

Can I wear a saree or a silk kurta to visarjan?

You can, and many people do, particularly for a short household immersion. For a long procession or a beach, cotton is the far more comfortable choice — silk holds water, dries slowly and marks easily.

Is white a good colour for visarjan?

It is traditional and looks lovely, but pale cotton goes translucent when wet and shows every splash. If you want white, choose a thicker weave and carry a change of clothes.
