Woods are the backbone of perfumery. They sit in the base of most fragrances doing structural work, and worn as the dominant character they read grown-up, warm and — unusually for perfume — genuinely year-round in India.
Fifteen of the twenty-six fragrances we stock have a woody base. Here is what each wood actually smells like, and which bottle leads with it.
The five woods you will meet
| Wood | Smells like | Behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Cedar | Dry, pencil-shaving, clean | The default modern wood; very wearable |
| Vetiver | Earthy, smoky, slightly green — a root, not a wood | Sharp and dry; excellent in heat |
| Sandalwood | Creamy, milky, warm | The softest wood; deeply familiar in India |
| Patchouli | Damp earth, dark chocolate, soil after rain | Divisive and very long-lasting |
| Oud (agarwood) | Resinous, animalic, smoky | The heaviest material in perfumery |
Vetiver and patchouli are technically roots rather than woods, but they live in the woody family because that is how they read.

Creamy woods — sandalwood-led
- Royal Santal (Rs.1,199) — creamy sandalwood lifted by dates and first rain, into vetiver, star anise, oud, amber and layered sandalwood. The most complete woody composition here, and the one with the deepest Indian resonance.

Dry woods — cedar and vetiver
- Solera No.20 (Rs.999) — orange and grapefruit into pepper, landing on vetiver, cedar, patchouli and benzoin. The best-value dry woody we stock.
- Solera No.18 (Rs.999) — mint and green apple over vanilla, cedar, vetiver and oakmoss.
- Citrus Amber (Rs.1,199) — grapefruit and lime with vetiver and amber. Wood doing the work under brightness.
- Wild Escape (Rs.1,199) — bergamot and lemon peel over musk and cedarwood.
Warm and spiced woods
- Solera No.24 (Rs.999) — woody powdery opening, warm spicy heart, rich aromatic amber base.
- Royal Amber (Rs.1,199) — spice and woods balanced by amber and vetiver. Bold and commanding.
- Spiced Vanilla & Spice Wood (Rs.1,199) — warm spices and gourmand sweetness over rich woods, sold as a layering pair.
- London Bar (Rs.1,199) — spiced rum and cigar smoke over a woody base.

Dark woods — leather and oud
- Uncensored Blue (Rs.1,199) — bergamot, grapefruit and cardamom into pepper, patchouli, wood and leather.
- Black Listed (Rs.1,199) — oud on dry woods. The darkest thing we stock.
- Persian Oud (Rs.1,199) — agarwood and amber under rose and pear.
Our oud perfumes guide goes deeper on agarwood specifically.

Why woody works all year in India
Woods are the one family that does not collapse in heat or disappear in winter. Dry woods — cedar and vetiver especially — read cooling and hold up at 35°C, where a gourmand turns syrupy. The same materials then gain depth below 25°C. That is why a woody scent is the right answer if you only want to own one bottle.
If you are building a fuller rotation, our perfume wardrobe guide sets out the four roles to fill.
Woody perfume FAQ
What does woody perfume smell like?
Dry, warm and grounded rather than sweet or fresh. Cedar reads clean and pencil-like, sandalwood creamy, vetiver earthy and smoky, patchouli like damp soil.
Is woody perfume only for men?
No. Woods sit in the middle of the sweet-to-dry axis, which is why most explicitly unisex fragrances are woody. Solera No.20 and No.24 are both labelled unisex.
Which woody perfume lasts longest?
Royal Santal, on sandalwood, oud, amber and patchouli. Solera No.24 is the best-value long wearer at Rs.999.
Is vetiver a wood?
Botanically it is a grass root, and patchouli is a leaf — but both read as woody-earthy and are grouped in the woody family in every classification system.
