You need five shirts, two trousers, one pair of shoes and a bag. That is the entire first-job wardrobe, and it costs roughly ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 depending on where you buy.
Everything beyond that is either a specific requirement of your workplace or a want. This guide costs the list honestly, explains which fabrics survive an Indian commute, and says plainly which conventional advice to ignore.
First: read your office before you buy anything
Indian offices in 2026 run on three different dress codes, and buying for the wrong one is the expensive mistake.
- Formal. Banking, law, client-facing consulting, government-adjacent. Full-sleeve solid or fine-stripe shirts, tucked, formal trousers, leather shoes. No denim.
- Smart casual. Most corporates, mid-size firms, agencies. Shirts in texture and check, chinos or dark denim, clean sneakers acceptable.
- Anything goes. Startups, product, design, engineering. A collared shirt still beats a graphic tee on a client day, and that is the only rule.
Spend your first week watching what the people two levels above you wear, then buy. Nobody has ever been penalised for dressing one notch above the room.

The five shirts
Two neutrals, two textures, one colour. Buy them in that order. Five is the number that lets you go a full week without repeating and still have one in the wash.
- Shirt 1 — white or off-white. The Entrepower Classic Formal White Shirt at ₹2,399 if your office is formal.
- Shirt 2 — light blue. Kollarz & Kreazez Blue Oxford at ₹1,499. Oxford cloth is the single most forgiving office fabric: it holds shape, hides creasing and survives a laundry cycle.
- Shirt 3 — a texture. Uri Ash Grey Herringbone at ₹1,099 or the Slate Blue Dobby Check at ₹999. Texture reads considered without reading loud.
- Shirt 4 — a fine check or stripe. Uri Light Brown Gingham at ₹999 or Black Pinstripe at ₹1,099.
- Shirt 5 — one you actually like. Pistachio Green Oxford Stripe at ₹1,099, or a linen pinstripe from Vellure at ₹2,750 if summer is long where you live.
Five shirts from the Uri range comes to roughly ₹5,200. The same five with two premium pieces mixed in lands nearer ₹8,500. Both are legitimate.
The two trousers
One charcoal or dark grey, one navy or beige. Skip black — it shows dust, lint and every iron mark. Two pairs in rotation will outlast three worn without rotation, because trousers fail at the seat from repeated pressing, not from wear.
Browse the men's trousers collection and the chinos buying guide for fit. The rule that matters: the hem should break once on the shoe, not pool. If you are between lengths, buy long and get it hemmed — that costs ₹150 and changes how the whole outfit reads.
Shoes, and the honest bit about them
If your office is formal, you need leather Derbys or Oxfords, and we do not sell them. That is a shoe-shop purchase and it is worth doing properly — badly made leather shoes are visibly bad in a way that a cheap shirt is not.
If your office is smart casual or relaxed, a clean minimal sneaker genuinely works and is more comfortable for an Indian commute. The Plaeto Classic 929 Black at ₹2,599 is the closest a sneaker gets to a black loafer; the Classic Black Honey at ₹2,399 is the slightly warmer version. Our Plaeto review covers sizing.
The bag, which matters more than one more shirt
A laptop that goes into a drawstring gym bag undoes an otherwise good outfit. This is the single highest-return ₹2,000 in a first-job wardrobe.
- Supervek Messenger Sling Bag — ₹895. The budget answer, and genuinely fine.
- Uberpack Insight Pack Laptop Bag — ₹3,999. A proper padded laptop compartment.
- Charme Heavy Lifter Tote — ₹2,599. Structured tote if you prefer carrying by hand.
The three details that separate looking employed from looking senior
- Fit at the shoulder. Nothing else on a shirt can be altered cheaply; the shoulder seam either lands on your shoulder bone or the shirt is wrong. Check this before checking anything else.
- Socks that are not white. Cotton socks in Indian humidity are also an odour problem — bamboo crew socks at ₹699 for three pairs solve both problems at once.
- An ironed collar. Most of what people read as "well dressed" is just a collar and a cuff that hold their shape.
What to skip in year one
A suit, unless your job requires one. Most Indian offices in 2026 do not, and a cheap suit reads worse than a good shirt and trouser. If you need one for a wedding, that is a different purchase with different rules — see our wedding guest guide.
Also skip: a second pair of black formal shoes, branded belts, and more than one tie. Buy the fifth shirt instead.
The costed list
- 5 shirts — ₹5,200 to ₹8,500
- 2 trousers — ₹2,400 to ₹4,000
- 1 pair of shoes — ₹2,400 to ₹3,500
- 1 bag — ₹895 to ₹3,999
- 3 pairs of socks — ₹699
Total: roughly ₹11,600 at the lower end, ₹20,700 at the upper. Build it over two months rather than one weekend if the number is uncomfortable — shirts first, then trousers, then the bag.
FAQ: first-job office wear in India
How many formal shirts do I need for a new job?
Five. That covers a working week with one in the wash. Rotation also extends the life of each shirt, so five bought once outlast three bought twice.
Are sneakers acceptable in an Indian office?
In smart-casual and relaxed offices, yes, if they are clean, minimal and in a solid colour. In formal offices, no. Read the room in week one rather than guessing.
What shirt fabric is best for an Indian office?
Oxford cotton for durability and creasing, dobby or herringbone for texture that hides wrinkles, and linen only if your office is relaxed about a lived-in look. Avoid high-polyester blends — they trap heat and shine under office lighting.
Should I buy black formal trousers?
Charcoal or dark grey is more useful. Black shows dust and lint badly in Indian conditions and pairs with fewer shirts than grey does.
How much should a first office wardrobe cost?
₹12,000–₹18,000 for five shirts, two trousers, shoes and a bag. Anything much below that usually means polyester blends that will not last a year; much above it is optional.
