Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and the week around it runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 11 November. That is five distinct occasions in six days, each with its own dress code — and one delivery network trying to move the entire country's festive shopping at once.
This guide is the planning half of festive shopping: what to buy for which day, and the dates to order by so it actually arrives.
The Diwali week 2026, day by day
| Day | Date | Occasion | What to wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November | Buying day, evening puja | Gold-friendly tones, daytime ethnic |
| Choti Diwali | Saturday 7 November | Home, diyas, family evening | Relaxed festive — the lowest-pressure day |
| Diwali / Lakshmi Puja | Sunday 8 November | The main night | The biggest outfit of the year |
| Govardhan Puja | Tuesday 10 November | Daytime puja | Simple ethnic, comfortable |
| Bhai Dooj | Wednesday 11 November | Family lunch, gifting | Smart daytime, nothing heavy |
Chhath Puja follows immediately after, from 13 to 16 November 2026 — worth knowing if you are shopping for a family that observes both, because the two wardrobes are completely different.

The order-by dates that matter
Work backwards from 6 November, not from 8 November. Dhanteras is the first day you need to be dressed, and it is a Friday — so anything arriving "the week of Diwali" is already late.
| Order by | For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-October | Anything needing alteration | Tailors are fully booked from late October |
| 18 October | Non-metro delivery addresses | Tier 2 and 3 routes slow first and recover last |
| 25 October | Metro addresses, main Diwali outfit | Leaves room for one size exchange |
| 30 October | Gifts and accessories only | Small parcels move faster than apparel |
The pattern every year is the same: the last week of October is when selection is still good and delivery is still reliable. The first week of November is when neither is true.

What to buy for which day
Dhanteras (6 November) — the buying day
Traditionally the day for buying metal, and the day the festive wardrobe gets its first outing. Gold-friendly colours work best — deep reds, mustard, green. The Women Mustard Kurta With Lace (Rs.799) and the Women Red Floral Printed Tie-Up Neck Kurta (Rs.799) both sit right for a daytime-into-evening day. Full detail in our Dhanteras outfit guide.
Choti Diwali (7 November) — the easy one
At home, lighting diyas, family around. This is the day to wear something comfortable you already own rather than spending on a fifth outfit. A simple cotton kurta like the Women Sea Green Kurta With Embroidered Yoke (Rs.799) is all it asks for.
Diwali night (8 November) — the main event
The one outfit worth spending on, and the one to order first. Whatever you choose, the practical constraints are the same every year: you will be sitting on the floor for puja, standing for hours afterwards, and near open flames all evening. Avoid anything with trailing sleeves or a loose dupatta near diyas — this is the most common festive accident there is.
Our Diwali dress guide for women and Diwali colours by day cover the choice properly.
Govardhan Puja (10 November) and Bhai Dooj (11 November)
Both daytime, both family-facing, neither needs a statement. A kurta set or a co-ord does the whole job — see our kurta and co-ord sets guide. Bhai Dooj is a gifting day, which is the other half of the planning problem.

Gifting: order these earliest
Gifts are where the delivery risk bites hardest, because a gift that arrives late has no second use. Fragrance and jewellery are the two categories that solve the most problems — no sizing, broadly safe taste, and both read as considered.
- Solera No.14 Eau De Parfum For Women (Rs.999).
- Solera No.18 Eau De Parfum For Men (Rs.999).
- Solera No.20 Eau De Parfum Unisex (Rs.999) — the safe option when you do not know their taste.
- Fraganote Royal Saffron (Rs.1,199) — the most festive-appropriate scent in the Fraganote range.
- Zach Vault Chain Bracelet (Rs.799) — the reliable answer for a brother on Bhai Dooj.
- Chunky Silver Stud Earrings (Rs.149) — small, and never the wrong size.
Our Diwali gift ideas guide and Bhai Dooj gift guide break these down by relationship and budget.

The mistakes that cost people every year
- Buying the main outfit last. It is the one most likely to need an exchange, so it should be ordered first.
- Planning from Diwali instead of Dhanteras. The week starts two days earlier than most people budget for.
- Leaving alterations to the last fortnight. Tailors stop accepting new work in late October.
- Buying five outfits. Two good ones and one repeat covers the week — Choti Diwali and Govardhan Puja do not need anything new.
- Ignoring the weather. Early November is pleasant in the north and still warm in Mumbai and the south. Buy for your own city, not for the photographs.
Diwali 2026 shopping FAQ
When exactly is Diwali 2026?
Diwali and Lakshmi Puja fall on Sunday 8 November 2026. The wider week runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 11 November. The 2026 festive calendar sits later than usual because of an extra lunar month, Adhik Maas.
When should I order to be safe?
By 25 October for a metro address and by 18 October elsewhere. Anything needing alteration should be bought by mid-October.
How many outfits do I actually need?
Two new ones — Dhanteras and Diwali night — plus something you already own for the quieter days. Five new outfits for five days is the most common overspend of the season.
What is the safest Diwali gift?
Fragrance. No sizing, broad appeal, and it gets used. A Rs.999 hundred-millilitre eau de parfum reads more generous than it costs.
